The redevelopment project “Hangar Creativi di Livorno” for the area between Via C. Meyer, Via dei Cavalleggeri, and San J. in Acquavia places public space at the heart of the initiative, aiming to make it the focal point of a renewed urban connection.

The project continues the existing urban fabric, enhancing its landscape character and creating a direct relational axis between the historic Villa Mimbelli and the seafront, one of Livorno’s most iconic locations, thereby helping to establish the area as a vibrant cultural and artistic hub.

The park has been designed as a multifunctional green space, capable of hosting events in synergy with the activities inside the Hangars through the central arena, whose pavement is inspired by the nearby Terrazza Mascagni.

The design of the open space represents the main strategic element for urban redevelopment and serves as a tool for reactivating spaces currently inaccessible to the city. The vision includes a large urban park structured around a new connection axis between Villa Mimbelli and the seafront, featuring the creation of plazas and green areas, pedestrian paths, and a bike lane.

The new urban landscape is developed through an alternation of green areas, functional zones, and pedestrian and bike paths, with the aim of improving the livability and accessibility of the site, encouraging its use. Multiple entry points make the area permeable, facilitating the movement of residents through the neighborhood.

The project includes strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change, particularly through the proper management of rainwater using various systems.

The central arena, located at a lower level than the pathways, will function as a retention basin to collect water from rooftops, while rain gardens will capture runoff from the pavements. An additional storage cistern will be installed underground in the new parking facility.

To mitigate the urban heat island effect, the new building will be partially covered with climbing plants, and the use of “cool pavements” will help reduce ground-level temperatures by absorbing less solar radiation than traditional paving materials.

The Greenway project on Via Forte dei Cavalleggeri envisions a radical reconfiguration of traffic, with a general redistribution of parking spaces and predominantly pedestrian and bicycle traffic, featuring shaded gathering areas. This redesign could eventually extend to the first section of Via Meyer up to the entrance of the Hangars.

All road intersections will be elevated to slow down vehicles and protect pedestrians and cyclists. In line with the sustainability principles set for the area, the Greenway will be equipped with bioswales (drainage beds) and parking spaces with permeable pavement. To raise awareness among residents about urban livability, the parking spaces could host temporary “parklets” before the construction begins. The removal of the wall along Via S. Jacopo will allow the road to be widened, improving road safety and providing access to the new parking lot, theater, and Hangars.
