The main challenge in redesigning Piazza Walther Bringolf was to integrate the historical heritage, the complex urban structure, and the new needs of the citizens with a sustainability-focused approach. After careful analysis, we decided to address these aspects with a clear and straightforward plan.
Connection to the Urban Context:
The square will harmonize stylistically with the surrounding streets and squares. For this reason, we will retain the quartz stone paving as a structural element within the intervention area.
Visual Impact and Identity:
To meet both climate and population needs while giving the square a strong visual identity, a circular gravel surface will be created. This shape, which surrounds the historical fountain, will be interrupted by the convent building, creating a symbolic link to the past.
Environmental Sustainability:
Large green areas with shrubs and grasses will be introduced to improve rainwater management and promote biodiversity. Additionally, climate-resistant trees such as oaks, rowans, and black hornbeams will be planted, strategically positioned to preserve key historical views.
Integration of Urban Greenery:
On Krummgasse, the two existing maple trees will be complemented by four new columnar maples, enhancing the area’s green character.
Functional Urban
Furniture:
With a minimalist design, the square will feature three long fixed benches and movable seating, adapting to various uses. This will make the space versatile, offering multiple opportunities for use and ensuring it is accessible to all.
In this way, a square that until a few years ago had no name will finally acquire a strong identity, becoming a gathering place for residents, workers, and visitors. We are proud to contribute to this significant development for the community.
