The Landscape Masterplan Pompeii Studio Bellesi Giuntoli was featured in issue 12/2024 of G+L: Magazin für Landschaftsarchitektur und Stadtplanung, one of the leading European journals on landscape architecture and urban planning.
Developed in 2022 for the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the project received the ASLA Professional Award in 2024.
Notably, Studio Bellesi Giuntoli was the first Italian landscape architecture studio to receive this prestigious recognition.
A Green Ring for the Ancient City of Pompeii
The project introduces a Green Ring, a continuous landscape route of approximately four kilometres that surrounds the ancient city.
Covering about 17 hectares, the masterplan connects archaeology, nature, and the contemporary urban context.
In addition, the new pathway system improves universal accessibility and redistributes visitor flows. As a result, it reduces pressure on sensitive archaeological areas. Cycling paths, viewpoints, and leisure spaces are integrated along the route.
Landscape, Memory, and Design Strategy
The masterplan is based on an in-depth interpretation of the historical landscape.
For example, the design reinterprets twentieth-century landscape elements such as pine groves, tuff stone paths, and planted rows. Tuff stone is used as a characteristic paving material, while Mediterranean species such as cypress trees act as visual landmarks.
According to Alberto Giuntoli, the project reflects on the relationships between the ancient city, the present city, and future urban scenarios. Therefore, sustainability, heritage preservation, and public accessibility guide the design approach.
Landscape Masterplan Pompeii of Studio Bellesi Giuntoli
This landscape masterplan adds a new layer to the archaeological environment of Pompeii.
Furthermore, it interprets landscape as a cultural, ecological, and social infrastructure. The publication in G+L Magazine confirms the international relevance of the project and highlights the role of Studio Bellesi Giuntoli in contemporary landscape planning for complex cultural heritage sites.
