The former-stoneware factory is located on the “gateway” to the Brembana valley coming from the historic centre of the city of Bergamo, in the territory of the municipalities of Ponteranica, Sorisole and Villa d’Almè. The area is immediately behind the hills of Bergamo, a few minutes by car or bike from the city centre.

Following the decommissioning of the stoneware production plant, this area quickly developed into a marginal area, characterized by numerous issues but also by considerable potential. The intervention area is in fact located between the town and the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo. For this reason, it is a great opportunity to mend these areas, both from a landscape-environmental point of view and from the multiple activities and services that it will be able to host.

The main objective of the masterplan is precisely the resolution of the caesura represented by the neglected factory, through the rediscovery of an environmental landscape “gradient”, which restores the dialogue between the “natural” landscape of the hills, the “cultural” one of the agricultural area and the former quarries, bringing together the element of innovation and partial conservation of the historical dimension represented by the recovery of the former factory, up to the strengthening of the connection with the urban fabric thanks to the redevelopment of the main road passing through the district. The entire area will be returned to the community, increasing the presence of greenery and improving liveability.

The masterplan is based upon the following principles:

  • Awareness of the multiple benefits offered by green spaces, from a landscape, environmental, social and economic point of view (mitigation of the urban heat island effect, improvement of the quality of life, increase in property value and boost to tourism)
  • Increase in biodiversity thanks to the enhancement of ecological corridors consisting mainly of ditches and canals of the minor hydrographic network
  • Giving life to aesthetically pleasing but at the same time functional environments
  • Ensure accessibility for all, through the creation of a slow mobility network with the installation of way-finding systems and signage integrated with the existing one of the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo
  • Intelligent management of rainwater through the use of bioswales and rain gardens, particularly in the area of the former factory, in order to reduce the impact of rainfall on the sewage system and reduce surface run-off
  • Energy saving and sustainability, thanks to the use of high albedo pavements, draining pavements and green roofs
  • Mitigation of the tram infrastructure and other interferences, through tree-lined buffer bands and specific crossings for small-sized fauna

The masterplan addresses various thematic areas, divided on the basis of the current characteristics and the new functions that each area could host:

  • AGRICULTURAL AREA: in the western portion of the park, the former company canteen building will be recovered, to house the farmhouse and teaching activity and land management for productive purposes according to the principles of multifunctional agriculture.
  • WET AREA: a part of the Gres lake, thanks to the insertion of native plants, will form a wetland with the main objective of creating a refuge for fauna and increase biodiversity.
  • URBAN PARK: the central area of the Parco delle Cave will host various types of activities and functions, from sports to cultural events to leisure time, with the aim of making the area attractive even on an extra-municipal and provincial scale.
  • FORMER FACTORY: the recovery of this area and its transformation into a residential and service area, from offices to retail, surrounded by greenery.
