The landscape project of the New Hospital of Livorno envisages a series of interventions involving the area of the hospital citadel as a whole, with the aim of creating a dialogue between the urban context and the building, through the insertion of greenery within the interstitial spaces between the buildings, in order to make the complex open towards the landscape and return the hospital open spaces to the city.

The various project interventions, which include the expansion of the historical Pertini park, the new integrated hospital, the evolution of the current hospital and the redevelopment of the former Pirelli factory, are conceived as a continuum of new public spaces, which will be a necessary condition to ensure the improvement of the ecological, social and health services of the city of Livorno in the near future. In this sense, the project proposal is based on a new vision of public space, which bases its identity on the interpenetration of closed and open spaces, flexible in use and in their perimeters, never binding itself to the present use but becoming totally adaptable to future needs, while respecting the historical memory of the city of Livorno.

In the continuous, but always controlled and controllable system of open and closed public spaces, this project can be experienced in a variable way with respect to age, gender, needs and times, transforming this portion of the city of Livorno into a new contemporary urban system where consolidated images and new paradigms can be found.

The intervention is articulated through some main themes, which translate into specific topics:

a) Reconnection between the new hospital and the park, through a dialogue between the green and the built environment, according to the principles of biophilia (green on the facade, green roofs, internal courtyards);

b) Repositioning of the existing square in the Pertini park with the creation of a new shaded “urban square” which takes the form of a new centrality;

c) Redevelopment of the green areas of the refurbished pavilions, with the insertion of green spaces dedicated to new activities and, where necessary, for exclusive use;

d) Sustainable water management, through the creation of a floodable area and bioswales along the paved surfaces, for the storage of rainwater and its infiltration into the ground, based on the principles of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS);

e) Earthworks rising from the level of the park create a visual connection with the new building, mitigating its insertion also thanks to the planting of trees on the slope;

f) Recovery of the original Italian garden enclosed within the citadel, with an intervention that takes the form of a new interpretation of the landscaping in a contemporary way;

g) Redevelopment of the garden on the Viale Alfieri side;

h) Insertion of equipped areas where to carry out recreational activities for all ages;

i) New refreshment point with public toilets.
