Covering 184 hectares, Villa Doria Pamphilj is one of the most beautiful and extensive Baroque villas in Rome. Located west of the city’s historic center in the territory of Municipio Roma XII, following its acquisition into the municipal heritage and its opening to the public in the 1970s, it has become a favored spot for Roman citizens to enjoy green spaces and engage in sports and other cultural activities in a unique environmental and cultural setting.

The restoration and redevelopment project is part of a broader effort to enhance and revitalize Villa Pamphilj as a whole, which also includes the restoration of buildings and fountains. Specifically, the project focuses on the redevelopment of parts of the park’s internal roadways, many of which are in poor condition; the revitalization of the historic pine grove, the rows of holm oaks along the avenues, and the oak woods through the replacement of trees and the planting of new ones; the installation of urban furniture in certain areas of the park; and the restoration of the Garden of the Theater.

The restoration project of the Garden of the Theater is based on the principles outlined in the ‘Florence Charter,’ while also taking into account the effects that climate change may have on the complex structures of historic gardens. The project is structured through various types of interventions, depending on whether it involves vegetation, certain architectural features, or pavements, with the aim of reconstructing the garden’s original image, appropriately revised and updated to ensure its long-term preservation.
